A Hampel Family History

The following article was submitted by Pat Hampel to the Kingman County Centennial History book in 1983.

Adolph and Mary Jenisch Hampel came to Kingman County in 1901. They came from Barton County by covered wagon.  The trip took two days. They brought their five children: Otto, Mary, Fred, Hattie and Charles with them.

Adolph and Mary bought a quarter of land in Galesburg Township, located two miles north and two miles west of Waterloo.  Besides being a farmer, Adolph was an excellent carpenter, building the house that is there today.

Adolph and Mary moved to Kingman in 1921, buying a house at 512 North Cedar.  Adolph continued his trade of carpentry until his death in 1950.  His daughter, Hattie, continued to live in the house.

After their move to Kingman, son Fred, moved onto the home place.  He married Helen Beat in April, 1922.  Fred and Helen had eleven children: Alfred, Berenice, John, Florence, Norbert, Paul, Ernestine, twins Martin and Martha, Ruth, and Geraldine.  These children attended grade school in Waterloo and high school in Pretty Prairie.  Helen died in 1947.  Fred married Marie Foxworthy in 1959.  They continued to live on the farm until June, 1974.  After the death of Fred's sister, Hattie, Fred and Marie moved to 512 North Cedar.  Fred died in June, 1975. Marie continues to live there.

Two of Fred's children still reside in Kingman County.  John and Florence Huelskamp Hampel farm and dairy two miles west of the home place. They have four sons: Garret, Mike, Dennis, and Tim.  Garret farms and dairy with his dad.  Martin and wife, Patricia own the home place now.  They have four children:  Christie, Fred, Tom and Julie.
